Use this spreadsheet for recording how many hours you spend per day and per week on your research.

I wrote most of my thesis while holding down a job. My principal memories are of working till late in the night. I'm a night-owl, not an early bird.

The great breakthrough for me was, at the suggestion of my coach, keeping a record of how many hours I spent on the thesis. I'd set a target for the week; after a few weeks I was able to meet it; I'd raise the target a little; finally, the habit of working at night was ingrained. I had an Excel spreadsheet that kept track of the hours per week. Now, even though the thesis is finished, I begrudge time spent watching useless TV and want to be doing 'productive' work.
